Colleague Spotlight: Greg Marsh

Our organisation is shaped by the incredible colleagues who make it what it is. One of those colleagues who has thrived over the 14 years he has been part of the Fresenius Medical Care UK & Ireland (FME UK&I) team is Technical Training Manager, Greg Marsh.

Initially joining in 2009, Greg began his career at FME UK&I in a fixed-term data entry position in our Technical Services department. Over the next 12 years, he completed an apprenticeship in electrical and electronic engineering whilst working with our technical team, then going on to work as Field Service Engineer, Technical Trainer, and Workshop Manager respectively. After deciding to leave in 2021, Greg rejoined FME UK&I in 2022 as our Technical Training Manger for the UK & Ireland.

In his role, Greg is in charge of directing the technical training for a range of NHS and private health technicians, ensuring that they become skilled operators in a variety of dialysis equipment. He takes great pride in passing on this technical knowledge in his role and enjoys seeing how the skills and capabilities of his trainees grow from session to session.

His role also means he meets many new people every week, which he describes as one of his favourite parts of his work. Building rapport and personal relationships with the people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who use FME UK&I’s technical equipment is a daily part of Greg’s role. Getting to see the real-world impact of the work he does in renal care is important to Greg; “Working in renal care is incredibly rewarding. I feel very lucky to get to the array of inspiring people I meet – it’s certainly a career I would highly recommend.”

For some, the prospect of teaching new and intricate technical skills to people can be daunting. However, for Greg there are some key skills needed to support trainees in their progression: communication, attention to detail, patience, and confidence. The most important skill to Greg, however, was “To understand that you’ll never know it all, and always have the ability to have an open mind to learn new things.”

Having first joined Fresenius Medical Care at just 20 years old, Greg has seen first-hand how dialysis equipment has changed and evolved over time. Renal care technologies are always developing, improving equipment monitoring capabilities whilst ensuring the treatment is as gentle as possible on the body. When looking ahead to future developments and challenges in his industry and department, Greg described how sustainability is his team’s next big project. The technical team, much like the other departments across FME UK&I, are taking steps to be as sustainable as possible, without comprising care.

Reflecting on his career, Greg describes how FME UK&I have given him the opportunity to always look for the next career goal. He commented, “My time at FME UK&I has allowed me to focus on my professional development, always positively challenging me to improve in my role and look to the next stage of my career. I’ve never felt like I’m at a standstill in my journey, and this outlook has kept me excited and motivated to do my best in my role.”

Greg’s dedication to refining the technical and interpersonal skills essential to his role reflects our drive at FME UK&I to stay adaptable in the ever-evolving healthcare landscape and help create a future worth living. His journey with us highlights our commitment to supporting colleagues in their growth and development, providing numerous paths for them to shape the careers they aspire to.
